RIOT LIPSTICK 1994
cast ceramic and tags
RIOT LIP-STICK, inspired by the increased use of guns by women (particularly after the 1992 riots in Los Angeles). As lipstick guns this work evokes the complexities of violence towards women from the “Iron Maiden” constrictions of the beauty industry (The Beauty Myth),rape and assault and to the fact that domestic violence is one of the leading causes of injury and death to women. The confusion of how violence is done and how women seek to protect themselves, only to find they have played into their own victimization, is illustrated in the poster created to sell RIOT LIP-STICK.
